We all want what’s best when it comes to our kids — especially when it comes to their health. Parents will move mountains to get their children the best care. And I’m here today to tell you, the healthiest kids on the planet are chiropractic kids!
And that’s not my opinion just because I’m a chiropractor, but because the science and research is there to back up what I’ve personally seen in over 15 years of practice when it comes to treating pediatrics, or children, with chiropractic adjustments.
In fact, listen to this direct quote from a landmark study that was published back in 1989 in the Journal of Chiropractic Research:
“[there is a] definite correlation between chiropractic care and superior health… [this study] …has shown that children raised under chiropractic care are less prone to infectious processes such as otitis media and tonsillitis, and that their immune systems are better able to cope with allergens such as pollen, weeds, grasses, etc. compared to children raised under allopathic [medical] care. There is also a significant decreased history of antibiotic use among the ‘Chiropractic’ children, indicating a lower susceptibility to bacterial infections as a result of their greater immune system response.”
This study also found that only 21% of the chiropractic children experienced otitis media, or ear infection, compared to 80% of medical children who did. That’s something every parent needs to hear!
Research by a German medical team performed in the 1980’s examined a random group of 1,250 babies five days after birth and showed that 95% of these babies were found to have misalignments in their upper cervical spines, with 211 of them suffering from vomiting, hyperactivity and sleeplessness. Although the researchers in this study were MDs, they recognized the power of chiropractic care and these babies were given the spinal care they needed. Gentle chiropractic adjustments to this group of children resulted in immediate quieting, cessation of crying, muscular relation and better sleep.
Another critical study from 1992, published in the Journal of Manual Medicine, helps us understand why infants and children need chiropractic evaluations and care. The study evaluated more than 600 children, all less than 2 years of age, who had spinal misalignments in the upper cervical spine. They found that these children had a wide range of clinical signs and in many cases could be dealt with effectively with a gentle chiropractic adjustment.
The main symptoms this study found associated with upper cervical misalignments are: torticollis, unilateral face asymmetry, C-scoliosis and motor asymmetries, unilateral slowed maturation of hip joints, slowed motor development, sleeping disorders, neck sensitivity, face swelling, fever of unknown origin, loss of appetite, feet deformities, pathological reflexes, range of motion diminished by 30% or more, and parents reporting baby does not eat or drink well.
There are several huge findings from this study:
1) The risk of treatment was minimal! No serious complications were encountered. Most children would cry for a moment but stop as soon as they were in their mother’s arms. In 2 cases (out of roughly 600) the children vomited after the adjustment but had no negative effect of outcome in either case.
2) It was noted that the upper cervical spine remains a weak spot in most children which is why they should be re-examined before they start school at age 6.
3) Subluxations, or spinal misalignments may not have symptoms and unfortunately for kids with issues such as restlessness and attention issues, the subluxation is typically not considered to be a cause and easily overlooked by the medical profession.
4) During delivery, delicate upper cervical structures undergo considerable stress and a majority of newborns suffer from micro-trauma of the brain stem tissues.
5) The adjustment of the upper cervical spine led to the disappearance of problems that the parents had not reported because they did not see a connection with the spine. These parents would regularly note that their child would eat or sleep much better following the treatment.
I know what you’re dying to ask me right now. How in world do we prevent these misalignments in the upper cervical spine in our newborns from happening?
Well, that’s just it. The cause is the birth process itself —which can be quite traumatic to the baby’s neck. Remember, the neck is SUPER delicate and weak which makes it quite vulnerable to the birthing process. Whether the delivery was vaginal or caesarian, both deliveries present their own inherent risks for damaging this area of the spine.
I know I’ve thrown a lot of facts and figures at you, so let me give you the main take-away message here: Chiropractic care for infants is safe, boosts their immune system, and one of the first doctors every parent should bring their infant to is a Chiropractor because spinal misalignments are a part of the birthing process and the majority of them have no signs or symptoms that a Medical Doctor would ever be able to catch.
According to the Chiropractic pediatric specialist Dr. Larry Webster, DC, there are six times in a baby’s first year of life when chiropractic examinations are especially important:
- After the birth process.
- When the baby starts to hold his/her head up.
- When the baby sits up.
- When the baby starts to crawl.
- When the baby starts to stand.
- When the baby starts to walk.
Toddlerhood through childhood is a very “physical” time. Those first hesitant steps soon evolve into jumping, running, falls and accidents which are all part of a normal childhood. While most falls are minor, at times they can cause misalignments throughout the entire spine with serious long-term consequences. For that reason, all children need periodic spinal check-ups as they grow into adulthood.
Through my years of practice, I have noticed positive changes in behavioral, physical, and emotional health of children under chiropractic care. Many different behavioral conditions improve with chiropractic care including ADD/ADHD, anxiety, focus, concentration, and grades in school.
Because our nervous system collectively controls and influences all bodily functions, removing nerve interference may result in improvement of many different health problems depending on the area of the spine and nervous system involved. Improvement is commonly seen in conditions such as colic, constipation, ear infections, allergies, asthma, sinus infections, persistent bed wetting, stomach aches, “growing pains” in the legs or arms, headaches, back and neck pain, scoliosis, and abnormal gait among others.
When it comes down to it, what is the best reason to have your kids under regular chiropractic care?
Balance, wellness, and prevention.
Trust me, it’s easier to grow healthy children than to repair damaged adults! Life is so much better when your children never seem to get sick or have health problems than when you are routinely going from appointment to appointment constantly treating the symptoms of ill health.
Parents in my practice bring their children in for chiropractic care because they want to encourage good nerve and brain development (neural plasticity), want their children to have optimal nerve communication throughout the body to promote health and wellbeing, strengthen their immunity, resolve breastfeeding and colic issues, increase their ability to learn and concentrate, helping to resolve poor posture, asthma, allergies and bed-wetting, and promote body balance.
If you are local to the Raleigh, North Carolina, area I invite you to bring your children in for a chiropractic assessment to see if their spine is in alignment, and if not, we can correct the misalignment before it develops into a long-term health concern. If your child is currently experiencing some health issues, please bring them in to be checked so we can determine if a communication error in their nervous system is a contributing factor in their health.
If you are not local, but interested in chiropractic care for your children, please find a chiropractor near you today!
Please share this video with a loved one that may need to hear this message about how effective chiropractic care is for children.
And, as always, please send me any comments or questions you may have about chiropractic care for kids. Remember, just because kids have tiny spines, that doesn’t stop a misaligned spine from creating big problems.
